Putting Her Best Foot Forward

As her third year on the Woodland Dance Team approaches, junior captain Payton Geary is taking on a new role: captain. Geary entered the dance world at four years old and has been dancing for 12. She has faced adversity and obstacles to get where she is today. Her motivation and passion for the sport and the Woodland Dance Team have shaped her and her team positively.

“Motivation is one thing I believe I bring to this team,” said Geary. “I motivate my teammates, especially when I am having a hard time during practice, because anything you say to your teammates also applies to you.”

As one of the three captains, Geary is responsible for running warmups, core circuits, and stretches. She also assists the coach in choosing certain outfits and organizes team bonding events. She always sets an excellent example for the girls on the team, no matter her state. This responsibility can cause stress and ups and downs, but Geary always pushes through.

Geary is open to talking to any of the girls on the team about dance or any personal issues. She respects each girl on the team and they mean a lot to her.

“I wouldn’t be on the team if the environment were not as welcoming as it is,” said Geary.

Looking forward to performing during football season, she loves competitions, but dancing at football games is her favorite. Geary loves going out on the field, having fun, and performing in front of the stands.

“Try anything and everything that the coach asks of you,” said Geary.  “Even if you have never tried certain choreography or tricks before, you never know what you can do until you try. It always looks best to put your best foot forward in everything you do.”
