Win Every Game, One Week at a Time

Senior captain Erik Pulkkinen’s passion for football began at a young age. He started playing flag football at the age of seven and then advanced to tackle football with the Woodland Junior Hawks. His early start helped build a strong foundation for his career, and as a result, Pulkkinen has become a versatile player. Whether he’s making a critical stop at defensive end or a key catch at tight end, Pulkkinen understands that being a good leader is all about setting an example in everything you do.

“A good leader has to be accountable, trustworthy, approachable, and a role model that others can look up to,” said Pulkkinen.

This year, Pulkkinen has one clear goal in mind for himself and the team: success.

“I hope the outcome of this season is a fun and successful one, with us finishing it off with a state championship.”

His focus isn’t just on the end goal; Pulkkinen emphasizes that it’s about the journey and the effort required week in and week out. Challenges are inevitable. Staying focused on each moment will be his biggest challenge. In a sport where every play counts, it’s vital to stay grounded in the present, a mentality that Pulkkinen continually reinforces with his teammates.

“We want to win every game, one week at a time,” Pulkkinen adds, reminding his teammates that consistency and dedication are essential.

When asked about his most memorable moment in football, Pulkkinen reflects on a moment that solidified his belief in the power of team effort and determination. That victory, in front of state championship alumni and the pursuit of the Pinho Trophy, became a symbol of what the team is capable of when they pull together.

“The night we beat Naugatuck last year is [a memorable moment] I’ll always remember,” said Pulkkinen. “It felt great talking about it with all my friends and family afterward.”
