Mason Menzies: Beyond the Whistle

By: Will Geci

Mason Menzies, the boys soccer junior captain, shows leadership both on the field and off the field. He guides his team to victory, whether it’s watching film or on the field.

When the team needs guidance on what to do next, Menzies instills a positive mindset. Menzies comments on how last season was not their best season. He believes the issue is partly due to the negative attitude. He knows this needs to be changed and will work to improve the attitude into a positive one. “We’re just working hard in practice, getting our fitness levels up, and we have a good coach, so we just have to follow through with the goal.”

One of the things that Menzies wants to ensure is by making his most memorable experience of the celebrations after games, and having them for the newer team members. To make great memories like he did.

Beyond the memories, Menizes wishes he had started to work harder sooner so he could have been better than he is now. He knows that if he had practiced more at a younger age, he could have mastered the sport then, which has made him encourage the younger members of the team to put in more effort and practice time so they can succeed sooner.

As a captain of the team, Menize knows when his teammates don’t have the right attitude, which prompts him to help them through whatever is troubling them to put his team in the winning mood. Even through a loss, he tries to improve the team mentality by pointing out mistakes that can be improved, and knowing that, ensuring the next game will be a win.

Menzie knows that every win and loss reflects on his leadership as he says “as the team wins, it reflects good on the captains. If the team loses it’s the opposite” as he says he knows that the team’s performance reflects on him and this gives him even more confidence and drive to succeed and guide his team to succeed on and off the field.

By guiding the team to succeed on and off the field, he knows this leads the team to succeed and be respected as the captain.
