Dia de Los Muertos Fundraiser

Every year, the World Language Honor Society (WLHS) sells goodie bags around the holiday Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

Dia de los Muertos is where people welcome back the souls of the dead for a celebration that includes food and drinks. These foods and drinks are often the favorites of people who have passed away, offered as a means for that person to come back.

It is traditionally thought that at midnight on October 31st, the gates of heaven are opened and from November 1st to November 2nd people can spend time with the dead. It is meant to be a fun celebration. For two days people can spend time with the people that have passed away.

“It is a positive spin on death and a fun celebration for families,” explained WLHS advisor Daniella Santos.

In addition to the food, drinks, and other offerings that people will have, there are also flowers called Cempasúchil. These flowers light the path from the dead world to the living world for the spirits of people to come back.

“They’re really bright, orange flowers and they lead the path back to the living world,” continued Santos.

Day of the Dead is something that has become more popularized throughout the years. In some places certain stores will have different Day of the Dead displays. Depending on the demographic in certain areas they are more likely to have certain displays up for this upcoming holiday.

This year in the goodie bags from WLHS there will be a cempasúchil flower, an eraser, a crock gibbet, a beaded necklace, a pencil, and a sticker.

On November 3rd and 5th members of WLHS will come around to advisories and sell the goodie bags. The goodie bags will cost one dollar for three or two dollars for five.

These goodie bags will go to help defer some of the costs for future field trips and the induction ceremony. They are also a fun and festive way to celebrate Day of the Dead. So be sure to support WLHS this year and buy a goodie bag for Day of the Dead.
