From Rio to the Rally: An Inside Look at Woodland’s Most Wonderful Week of the Year

It’s the most wonderful week of the school year. Spirit Week at Woodland is back, bringing a tidal wave of laughter, fun and of course some fierce competition. Between the wacky dress-up days, the all-out Color Wars, and the sacred Black and Gold Day the question remains which of these is the most popular among students?

Each year the dress up day changes based on the theme of homecoming. Since this year’s theme is a Night in Rio, on Monday November 24 students will be dressing up as Bikers vs. Surfers, where the upperclassmen will be bikers and the underclassmen will be surfers.

On Tuesday students will come in their designated colors for their grade. There are four colors for each of the different grades. Seniors will wear red, juniors will wear blue, sophomores will wear yellow, freshmen will wear green.

Each grade also gets to pick a different theme to decorate their hallways with, again following the color that matches their grade.

“Color wars is the best because I enjoy seeing all the people in my grade represent the same color,” said Tyler Patchkofsky. “I like seeing us unite against all of the other grades.”

Lastly the day before Thanksgiving comes and this is where students will truly go all out for their grade. It is Woodland’s signature black and gold day with Pep Rally at the end to conclude spirit week.

People will dress up in their sports gear, woodland gear or just plain black and gold. At the end of the day people get called up for Pep Rally and get ready to have the fiercest competition of the week. From the Scavenger Hunt, to Tug of War and Hungry Hungry Hawks.

“Pep rally day is my favorite because it is really just a huge sense of community,” said Clara Sweetland. “All grades come together in spirit and rivalry but it is always so much fun.”

At the end of the Pep Rally the winners of spirit week are crowned and spirit week concludes for the year.

So all in all Woodland’s favorite day of the spirit week is Color Wars. The best competition is yet to come so be sure to participate in spirit week this year and get into the Holiday spirit with Spirit Week.
