Strength, Support, and Shot Put

For senior indoor track captain Clara Sweetland, positivity to her teammates before they compete will give them confidence.

“I feel like I am a very positive person when it comes to track. I do an event that is not very well known in the sport [shot put], so in my events I like to lift everyone’s spirits before they throw and I also cheer on everyone else while I am waiting for my event,” said Sweetland.

For Sweetland, shot put is not just something she does in her free time; it is a special bond with her dad who taught her his ways.

“I learned about throwing from my dad who was also a thrower in high school and told me to try that,” said Sweetland. “I immediately felt that I belonged there and felt amazing support from my teammates and coaches.”

Sweetland’s favorite memory from all of her track years is her sophomore year NVL final because it was such a good environment with everyone supporting each other.

“It felt like we were one big family.”

Track has left a very positive impact on her life that she will never forget.

“Track has brought me some of my best friends. I have met so many great people and gained so many new skills because I do field events.”

Sweetland’s track career is more than just shot put, it’s about lifting her teammate’s spirit and making sure her legacy is never forgotten.

“Shot put is different and not many people can do what I do so I feel like this has a very positive impact on my life.”
