1K and Leading the Way

Senior boys basketball captain John Napiello has been around the game of basketball for as long as he can remember. He first picked up a ball at just four years old, and from that moment on, the sport became a constant in his life. Years of dedication and growth have helped shape Napiello into the leader he is today, now guiding the Hawks into an undefeated season so far.

One of Napiello’s most memorable experiences in basketball came early on, playing eighth-grade travel basketball. That stage of his career helped spark his competitive mindset and love for the game, laying the groundwork for what was to come. As he continued to develop, his hard work paid off when he earned a varsity starter spot during his sophomore year.

“When I finally got a starting spot on the varsity team, that is when I was most proud of myself,” said Napiello.

Now entering the season as a captain, Napiello has clear goals, both personally and for the team. Individually, he hopes his performance and leadership will earn him all-state recognition, especially now that he has scored 1000 career points on Jan 13th.

“I was proud of myself because I was the first on the boys team to reach 1000 points since 2019,” said Napiello.

With years of experience behind him and high expectations ahead, Napiello is focused on bringing out the best in himself and his teammates as they chase an NVL championship.

As a leader, Napiello leads through demonstration and communication. Whether it’s directing the offense at his point guard position or encouraging teammates during tough moments, he understands that leadership is about consistency, effort, and trust.

“I lead through example,” said Napiello. “That’s how a true leader does it.”

For the team, the mission is simple but demanding: win a championship.

“I want us to win it all,” said Napiello. “That’s the goal.”
