For Woodland Regional girls basketball senior Carina Rodriguez, leadership is built on trust, consistency, and approachability. As a four-year member of the program and a senior captain, Rodriguez has grown into a leader who values connection just as much as competition.
“Being a captain means leading your team and being someone they can approach when they have concerns or questions about what we’re doing,” Rodriguez said.
That philosophy has shaped her leadership style throughout the season, as she works to support teammates both on and off the court.
One of her main goals as captain is to foster a positive, encouraging team culture.
“I hope I can create an environment where mistakes are welcomed, and people are afraid of trying different stuff on the court,” said Rodriguez.
By emphasizing growth over perfection, she hopes to help players feel more confident taking risks during games. This mindset is especially important for a development-focused team.
“Establishing an offense and getting our underclassmen involved more is our biggest goal,” said Rodriguez. With younger players stepping into larger roles, she believes confidence and communication are key to the team’s success.
During tough practices or close games, Rodriguez helps keep the team focused by setting a clear standard.
“Our team is focused on working hard and giving it our all all the time, so it’s just an expectation,” Rodriguez said.
Individually, Rodriguez has worked hardest to improve her defense.
“I definitely work the hardest on defense and making sure that I’m in the right space at the right time and everyone else’s as well,” she said. Her defensive awareness and communication make her a reliable leader on the court.
Before every game, Rodriguez follows a personal routine to stay grounded.
“I always try to say an athlete’s prayer before a game,” Rodriguez shared. As her senior season continues, Rodriguez hopes to be remembered for how she made her teammates feel.
“I just hope people remember me as someone who’s approachable and people aren’t scared to make mistakes around.”
