Two and a half gallons of ice cream in an hour and thirty minutes is definitely a challenge but it’s very possible, especially with $300 on the line.
The Big Dipper Ice Cream Parlour hosted an ice cream eating competition at the Prospect Fire Department on March 8th. With about 13 teams participating, the contest had a massive showing with many spectators coming and enjoying the complimentary ice cream.
There were two categories: amateur teams and teen teams. The Ice Cream Tour (Amateur team) won at the 56-minute mark. The Deep Freeze (Teen team) completed the two and a half gallons in 57-minutes. Even though time is paramount, a good strategy is better than rushing.
Some strategies that one of the contestants Mariah Hawley (WRHS Alum) used were: Pregaming with lactaid pills, having the strongest person serve and stir the icecream to make it like soft serve, and drinking warm water to combat brain freeze. Hawly recalled the most effective strategy was stirring the ice cream
“ It made it easier to scoop and eat. [The warm water] was the worst idea; It was disgusting and didn’t have any noticeable benefit.”
The Big Dipper considered this event a success giving out over $500 including prizes, free shirts and sundae vouchers to the participants. The Big Dipper plans on continuing to host this event yearly. If two and a half gallons of ice cream is too big of a feat for you, feel free to stop by the parlor that is now open 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. during the week and 11am to 8pm on the weekends to enjoy as much ice cream as you can handle
