Beyond The 8-Count

Communication and leadership are the biggest traits that you need as a captain. For junior captain Allison Baran, she emphasizes on having good communication so she can easily communicate to her teammates and coaches.

“I love how close our team is and how we are like a family with each other,” said Baran. “Our team is always such a close and comfortable environment.”

Every new year they all try to become like a family before competition season. “When the freshmen come in they all try to make them so comfortable and let the freshmen know that they can talk to anyone on the team.”

From the dance team being with each other everyday they have to be like one big family. “We get this close from all the team bonding that we do. We watch a movie or sometimes we do activities. This year we are planning to go to a haunted trail,” said Baran.

Baran realized she wanted to join the dance team in middle school. “When my sister joined the dance team I saw how much fun she and I just knew that was something I wanted to do.”

Baran had to go to every competition starting in January because of her sister. In January Baran’s 3rd year of competition starts, that is what she is most excited for. The dance team likes to lock in before they hit the floor. Listening to their music and getting ready for their hip hop or jazz.

Other than having to lock in on the gym the dance team also has to lock in at the field. Baran’s favorite part of game day is “getting ready together and then just going up to the field and taking cute pictures and doing our sidelines dances.”

Being captain is not as easy as it looks. It means staying on top of everything and making sure that the whole team is focused. But above all, the hardest part is keeping a leadership role while also balancing your friendships on the team.

As she’s heading into her junior year she reflexes on trying to say present and just take in every moment. Baran said “ I would tell my freshmen self to not stress and overthink everything and just to live in the present¨.
