Blame it on the Vitamin D

Having a bad day? Walking outside to snow piled up on your car or walking outside to 10 degree weather hitting you in the face will definitely not make your day any better.  As long as you’re not Jack Frost or Santa Claus the sunshine on a warm spring day can put a smile on anyone’s face in an instant. Even Olaf from Frozen loves the warm weather. The second the grass starts to turn a little more green, the flowers start to bloom, the windows in your car start to roll down, bad days don’t exist anymore. When the spring air hits, forgetting your jacket or forgetting a shovel on the way out of your house isn’t so much of a worry anymore. Life just seems simpler. Just know that if you aren’t in for a warm spring, blame it on the vitamin D.

When the weather drops to a freezing cold people’s mood can suddenly change. The cold makes people want to stay home all day and makes people procrastinate.

“There’s nothing to do in the cold weather, you can’t do any activities without freezing, like going to the beach,” says Senior Kaltrina Ameti.

A favored activity to do in the cold weather is to stay in bed all day. Staying in bed all day has caused high depression rates because it’s a getaway to isolate yourself from friends, family, and the outside world. This isolation causes procrastination because staying in bed all day also causes people to not want to get up since it sends people into a sense of relaxation.

When the weather rises to a warmer temperature it allows people to feel more free. It allows people to go out and do things that they wouldn’t be able to do in the cold or wouldn’t be comfortable doing in the cold. Going to the beach or going on walks in the cold isn’t enjoyable.  It makes people feel like the only option isn’t just to stay in bed all day. The reason why we love the warm weather is due to the Vitamin D. It releases dopamine in the brain, and if you ever have taken psychology you would know that this creates a sense of happiness. Vitamin D is also known for helping anxiety go away, it’s free medication for stress to go away.

“It makes me feel like summer is close when the weather gets warmer which means school is off and I’m free to do anything. It also boosts my energy because the sun is shining versus the cold is gloomy and gray,” says Junior Clara Sweetland.

If you’re lucky enough to wake up to a warm spring day, take advantage of it and maybe your mood will be boosted in an instant. The pants and long sleeves will go away and the shorts and short sleeves will say hello.
