With winter break approaching, that means the college football playoffs are starting. This event is one of the biggest events of the year. These games are always action packed with high scores and upsets. They will leave you on the edge of your seat. This time the playoffs have a new format. Instead of the traditional four team playoff, for the first time in ten years the football committee decided to change the format to twelve teams. With this move, there has been a lot of positive comments but there is always negative that comes with it.
One of the biggest complaints is that one or two losses aren’t going to impact a team’s chances of making the playoffs. Jesse Kelly, a famous author and a Ohio State football fan stated
“This is why a 12 team playoff is lame. I’m not even that mad they lost to Michigan. Why? Cause it doesn’t mean as much as it used to.”
This statement is shocking because Michigan and Ohio State have one of the biggest rivalries in all of football and the two fan bases don’t get along together at all when it comes to football. Ohio State is 10-2 but is more than likely going to make the playoffs. However, if the playoffs were still a 4 team format, there would be no chance they would make the playoffs. Other members on X (Twitter) are saying leave the madness for March and its getting rid of the competitive nature because losing a game or two used to derail a team’s hopes of making the playoffs.
There are more positive statements about the new format. The argument for why the playoff format is good for college football is because it can create more opportunities for teams for a chance at the playoffs. Clay Travis, a radio host, also claims conference championships matter more because a team like Clemson would not have made the four team playoffs with a win over SMU in the ACC Championship. Other users on X(Formally known as Twitter) claim that other games are getting more attention because of all the different possibilities for the college football playoffs. This will be great for college football because there are a lot of overlooked teams that don’t get a shot for the title because of their conference.
After getting the chance to interview fellow Woodland Hawks we got the chance to see what the youth thinks of the new playoffs. Michael Landrigan, an avid watcher of college football, says
“More teams being involved in the playoffs will be a lot better than the usual four power house teams.”
Ben Pugliese, a football player here at Woodland, claims that the new playoffs will be better for the viewership.
“ I think it brings more attention and competition which will bring in more viewers.”
Overall, the new college football playoff expansion will be a new experience for everyone. People will have their opinions on the new change. Undoubtedly, the playoffs will still bring the same excitement as it does each and every year.
