Cup Runneth Over With Whole Latte Love

In the fall and spring the WRHS Drama department always puts on a play for the whole school to watch. This year, the new drama teacher, Dana Lawson, selected the play, Whole Latte Love, to produce.

Over her career as a theater teacher she has produced over 20 plays, with lots of different casts, and different genres. For her first year at the school, she decided to do something lighthearted and fun, in order to get to know the students that she was working with.

“It’s a comedy play, and it’s a bit wacky,” said Lawson. “But, it’s something that our cast can have a lot of fun with.”

As a new teacher to the building, Lawson was unsure of who may be coming to audition for the play so she decided to talk to other teachers who have worked in the theater department previously to see what kind of show she should do.

“It was a lot of going back to the drawing board, and I settled on this one because I wanted to pick something that was just a little bit shorter,” said Lawson. “ I didn’t want to tackle anything that was too long.”

As a director of many plays, Lawson can attest to the fact that putting on a two-plus hours  play is a very difficult thing to do. Especially with a bigger play generally means a bigger cast, with lots of different ideas throughout the cast. She wanted to do something with a smaller cast so that it would be easy to manage it and so that the small cast could play around with different ideas.

While it is considered a one act play, Lawson says that there will still be an intermission and that the cast will try to stretch out some parts of the scenes to make it feel like a longer play, and play with ideas that are not necessarily in the script.

“My favorite part about this [play] is the variety of characters. There’s lots of room for fun moments to play out on the stage,” Lawson said.

Working with an older cast is something that Lawson is excited to do this year, as she has not directed high school students in a while. She is excited to explore the talents that Woodland has brought to the stage this year.

The show dates are November 8th and November 9th at seven P.M in the Woodland auditorium. Be sure to support the cast and the new drama teacher in this production of Whole Latte Love.
