This Valentine’s Day, while couples across the world exchange gifts and flowers, women are making space to celebrate a different kind of love: the kind shared between friends. Galentine’s Day, a tradition made popular by the hit TV show Parks and Recreation, has evolved into a heartwarming celebration of friendship, empowerment, and gratitude. From brunches to spa days, it’s a chance to spread love without the pressure of romance, proving that the best relationships aren’t always romantic.

The concept of Galentine’s Day was first introduced in 2010 by Parks and Recreation character Leslie Knope, played by Amy Poehler. In an iconic episode, Knope gathers her closest friends to celebrate their bond over waffles and mimosas, declaring that the holiday is “only the best day of the year.”

Since then, it’s evolved from a quirky sitcom moment into a cultural phenomenon. While originally geared towards women who were single or simply wanted to avoid the typical Valentine’s Day hustle, Galentine’s Day has now grown to encompass all women, regardless of relationship status.

“ I love the idea of galentine’s day, it’s a fun way to celebrate friendships,” says Woodland senior, Kaltrina Ahmeti.

The holiday serves as a reminder to appreciate women in our lives, no matter what form those friendships take.

From brunches to wine nights to personalized gift exchanges, Galentine’s Day celebrations come in all shapes and sizes. In recent years, many women have embraced the opportunity to host themed parties, exchanging thoughtful gifts, enjoying homemade treats, and even getting creative with personalized crafts.

“I love to hang out with my friends and exchange gifts and bake cookies,” says Ameti.

Local businesses have jumped on the trend, offering Galentine’s Day-themed products, from cute stationary to custom jewelry, creating the perfect way for women to spoil each other with love and care. It’s not just about a material exchange, however—many women enjoy giving their friends something that speaks to their unique bond, like a handwritten letter or a day of pampering.

One of the core values of Galentine’s Day is inclusivity. It’s a holiday for women of all backgrounds, ages, and walks of life. If you’re a mother, a student, or a career woman, this day allows all to come together and honor the shared experience of womanhood, offering a moment to connect, reflect, and empower one another. In fact, research has shown that strong female friendships contribute to better mental and emotional well-being, reinforcing the idea that these relationships should be celebrated just as much, if not more, than romantic ones.

So, whether you’re gathering around a table for waffles or sending a heartfelt message to a friend from afar, this February 13th, make it a point to celebrate the women who make your life brighter. After all, the best way to spread love is by nurturing the friendships that mean the most.
