As spring sports approach here at Woodland, uniforms and equipment are being distributed. From bags to balls, the signature black and gold on each are prominent to our athletes. But as they are repeating on every athlete, some make a feature personable. This is their hairstyles. Braids, buns, colored hair, and ponytails, these are what set Woodland athletes apart from the crowd.

From softball, track, to tennis, many athletes prefer braids over ponytails to keep the hair out of their face while playing or competing.

“When I play, I prefer braids rather than a ponytail because it keeps all of the baby hairs out of my face,” states softball player Emma DeGeorge. “I change my hairstyle every year but I do like braids.”

The new fad of hairstyles in athletes are bubble braids. These are achieved by putting multiple elastic bands on ponytails and pulling hair out to make it puffy, achieving the bubble effect.

“I love a bubble braid for other athletes, especially with long hair,” states volleyball player Julia Dommel. “But my go to hairstyle is a slick back bun.”

Slick Backs are also a popular go-to. Those make athletes look sleek and confident.

“I think slick-backs make athletes look more put together in a hectic environment,” said Dommel. “It makes them look very professional,”

Hairstyles can impact and improve their performance.

“I change it every year for a fresh start,” stated DeGeorge. “It makes me feel more confident when I play”

More popular hairstyles include ponytails with braids, which keeps the hair from the ponytail out of the face while competing, high ponytails, and different types of braids such as: Dutch, French and fishtail.

Athletes have confidence in themselves, expressing them through hair improves what they can show on the field.

“Thanks to my hair I feel more like myself and I can play better,” said DeGeorge.
