At the Holiday time people often get into the spirit of joy by listening to holiday music. There’s no doubt that there are a variety of different songs and artists who produce music of the Christmas genre. The question is which one song is the best?
At the top of Spotify charts is no surprise, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey. Released in late 1994, it quickly shot to the top of the charts and to this day is a 16 time platinum song.
Coming in at number two is another fan favorite, “Last Christmas” by Wham. This song was released in 1984 and has 1.67 billion streams on Spotify
Next up released in 2014 is “Santa Tell Me” by Ariana Grande. This popular song holds 1.15 billion streams on Spotify.
Then in fourth place is a throwback classic, “Rockin Around the Christmas Tree” by Brenda Lee. A little fun fact about this song is that she recorded this song at just 13 years old and it holds 1.12 billion songs, and was also featured in the popular blockbuster movie Home Alone.
Last but not least coming in at number five is “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” by Michael Bublé. Bublé is often known as the “King of Christmas,” and releasing only ten years ago, it quickly became a fan favorite. This song holds 1.08 billion streams on Spotify.
All of these songs are no doubt fan favorites and many have heard at least one of these songs. However, here at Woodland, students may not agree with these songs as the top of their lists for this holiday season. Only one of the top five songs makes it onto the Woodland’s Christmas Playlist.
Coming in at number one for Woodland’s Christmas playlist is a Kelly Clarkson classic, “Underneath the Tree”. This song was released in 2013, and is a very popular and catchy song.
“It’s really upbeat and fun,” said senior Christmas lover Ava Neclario. “It’s different from a lot of the slower original Christmas music.”
Up next is a little love song to get people into the holiday spirit, “Christmas Baby Please Come Home” by Darlene Love. It is a song that often reminds people of love and joy in the holiday season.
Then, back for both the Spotify and the Woodland playlist is “Last Christmas” by Wham. This is a song that often reminds people of the cheesy Hallmark movies.
“Last Christmas has such a Hallmark-Christmas-movie vibe,” said Christmas enthusiast Julia Galasso.
Lastly, a little tropical song that reminds people of the summer and joy, “Mele Kalikimaka” by Bing Crosby. Not only is this a popular Christmas song, but the joy people get from it often reminds them of the summer season that is ahead of them.
“It’s so bright and joyful,” said Christmas enjoyer Ella VanAlstyne. “It always reminds me of the summer.”
Regardless of Woodland’s or Spotify’s top playlist this Christmas, there are many wonderful and joyous songs to put people into the holiday spirit this holiday season.
