The Woodland Dance Team has had many accomplishments in the 20 years since it has been established, including Naugatuck Valley League championships have been won, putting the dancers at the top in their division. After countless tries and failed attempts, with some success at the state level, the team was just out of reach for that title of being a state champion.

That changed on February 22, when the title was taken home by the 2024-2025 Woodland Dance Team.

As a whole, the dance team has been very successful this season. Being a two-time Naugatuck Valley League champion and placing high in the ranks in multiple competitions throughout the state. But as far as the state competition goes, the win was worth the time and effort.

“To be the coach that led the team to victory for the first time in twenty years feels pretty special,” said coach Jenn Cataldi. “As a four year coach it is quite an honor to have helped the team accomplish this.”

As a coach, it is important to keep your team motivated. Cataldi ensured the team had the right mindset and allowed them to reach their full potential.

“I try not to put a lot of pressure on them to win,” Cataldi stated. “I want them to go out there and have fun and do what they do best. Putting too much pressure on them will make them crack.”

As a team, the dancers have worked hard to complete their goals. With the motivation from their captains, junior Payton Geary represents what it takes to motivate the team.

“Team chemistry is what helps us stay focused on our goal,” stated Geary. “It is also crucial in each performance because we all need to be in the same formation.”

Geary is proud of the team and what they have accomplished this season.

“It feels extremely rewarding to be a state champion, and to lead the team to this point makes me feel like I have fulfilled my role as a captain, ” Geary explained. “I want nothing more than to help and support my teammates and help them grow.”
