As the cold, crisp weather starts to turn to warmth and winter comes to a close, indoor sports and activities wind down and come to an end. Do not worry because with the end of winter means the beginning of spring, where many more opportunities open up. Maybe you’re interested in a sport or have your eyes set on one of the school’s clubs.
Many students are getting ready and preparing for the ups and downs of the season ahead. Woodland baseball and softball teams are looking for another great season of success with the last season having two state titles brought home.
You may want to take your talents to the diamond and play baseball. With the strong coaching and encouragement from Steve Bainer, Woodland’s boys baseball team made a huge push in the playoffs and took home the Connecticut Class M state championship last season. With the hope to repeat that this season the boys are already working hard to prepare for the season ahead. Even after losing some key seniors many players are ready to step up and lead this team to another championship.
The other notorious diamond may have caught your eye as well. After another successful softball season, making a great push through the postseason and taking home their third straight Connecticut Class M state championship. Yet, Coach Luddy and the softball team are keeping their foot on the gas and are looking for their 4th straight victory. Off-season work is underway with after-school lifts and the teams working on their own to prepare for a great season ahead.
Track and field athletes are preparing to hit the ground running. After a rather decent season last year, the Hawks are looking to take their season further. With many different events whether it is long distance, short sprints, jumping, or even throwing, athletes are pushing themselves to be better. Coach Lownds is going to keep working with these athletes making sure that needed improvements are made. With a hopeful season ahead, the Hawks look to bring home some big wins.
The tennis courts will soon be buzzing with activities as athletes train to fill the season with some excitement. Coach Chris Sutton looks to bring students in and bring success to Woodland’s program. Both the boy’s and girl’s teams are looking to have an impressive season as they get ready with clinics and training on Sundays, where kids take time to perfect their play. Sutton is encouraging kids to join and try something new.
