Rec basketball draws plenty of attention during the winter season, as high school students in the Region 16 community form teams to compete for bragging rights. These games take place on Monday and Tuesday nights from 6:00 to 8:45 P.M., with teams promoting their matchups on Instagram—often talking trash to draw bigger crowds. Some games are highly competitive, while others resemble casual recess-style pickup games.
Ethan Henry, a player in the league, praises the league for creating opportunities for students who don’t play winter sports. He enjoys the balance between competition and fun.
“I love the culture of the league. A lot of people enjoy playing in the games,” Henry said.
Rec basketball also brings together students from different towns in a spirited but relaxed environment.
“It’s really big in our towns, and I think rec basketball is a great way for students to just relax and have fun,” Henry added.
Beyond the players, the league fosters a strong sense of community. Parents often come to support their sons’ teams, while other students—whether they play basketball or not—fill the stands to cheer for their friends. The atmosphere is electric, making these games an enjoyable and free source of entertainment.
At first glance, a team full of high school football players playing basketball might not seem like the best idea. However, in this league, no one wants to lose. Cole Sansone, a member of the Gen 5 Shooters, appreciates the competitive energy.
“The league is very competitive—nobody likes to lose. Naturally, everybody wants to win,” Sansone said.
Each season builds up to the ultimate showdown: the championship. Every team’s goal is to take home the title and claim ultimate bragging rights. Ask any player who they think will win, and they’ll confidently say their own team.
Rec basketball is fun for everyone—a chance to compete, have fun, and prove who’s the best. If you didn’t play this year, you should definitely consider joining next season. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just looking for a great time, rec basketball might just be one of the most exciting experiences of your high school years.
