What classifies a sport? This is a common question asked throughout America. Ever since people saw break-dancing at the Olympics, many began debating what truly defines a sport. According to Google, a sport is anything that involves physical exertion and requires skill, whether done individually or as part of a team. Some activities that are most commonly debated include poker, NASCAR, cheerleading, dance, competitive eating, and golf.

In Connecticut, the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) determines whether an activity should be declared a varsity sport or remain a club. The CIAC follows a process that requires the activity to show sustained interest from multiple schools across the state and demonstrate long-term stability over several years.

Chris Dailey, Athletic Director at Woodland, provided insight into how the CIAC considers certifying a club to become a varsity sport.

“To be considered an official sport, it means they have to adhere to the rules and regulations of the CIAC,” Dailey said.

This means a club must have established rules and guidelines to even be considered for varsity status.

Several clubs are not yet recognized as varsity sports. Key examples include girls’ ice hockey, cheerleading, and dance. Despite their club status, the CIAC still organizes postseason events and recognizes state champions. Additionally, the CIAC hosts numerous competitions across the state for these teams to join and compete in.

At Woodland, there is no difference between club and varsity sports regarding expectations. Each team is held to the same standards and regulations set by the CIAC. Every athlete must attend at least two classes and pass all courses from the previous quarter to remain eligible for competition. These requirements help maintain accountability and reinforce the importance of balancing academics and athletics, regardless of the activity.

The question of what defines a sport will likely persist as new activities continue to emerge and gain popularity. Over time, more clubs will strive for recognition, hoping to achieve varsity status. However, whether classified as a varsity sport or a club, what truly matters is the passion and dedication athletes bring to their activity.
