Returning to the field once again as captain is senior Mark Poulin. As a receiver and cornerback, Poulin is a driving force on both sides of the ball for the Hawks.
Poulin is known as a respected leader since stepping onto the varsity field, especially after being given the opportunity to serve as a junior captain last year. This is not his first rodeo. His football journey started in sixth grade with the Woodland Junior Hawks where his passion for the game first took root.
Now, as a senior, Poulin finds himself at the helm of a team with high aspirations.
“Our goal is to win a state championship and keep the Pinho Trophy,” said Poulin, referencing the rivalry prize the Hawks fight the Naugatuck Greyhounds for each year. “But more than anything, we want to play our absolute best every week. That’s how you earn respect.”
When asked about his most memorable moment playing Woodland football, Poulin doesn’t talk about a single play or personal stat. Instead, he recalls a tradition that symbolizes the Hawks’ unmatched brotherhood.
“The song ‘Umbrella’ by Rihanna always takes me back,” Poulin said with a grin. “We played it in the locker room every time we won. It reminds me of past classes, the energy, the pride–everything that makes Woodland football special.”
As captain, Poulin wants to lead with both focus and fearlessness.
“To me, leadership is leading by example and not being afraid to speak up when the team needs it. That’s how you earn trust and respect,” said Poulin.
In high-pressure situations, Poulin doesn’t let distractions or doubts creep in.
“I focus on my job at that moment. If I start thinking about other people’s responsibilities or what could go wrong, I’m more likely to make mistakes,” said Poulin. “Staying locked in is everything.”
