Being a captain involves not just leadership at meets, but setting the standard at daily practices and motivating teammates to improve every day. However, in Trevor Longo’s case, he believes success stems from the effort no one else sees.
“I think all of the hard work that people don’t see really does pay off,” Longo said.
“When you get a PR or place really well at a meet, it is just an amazing reward.”
He plans to provide leadership that keeps the team motivated throughout the season. Throughout all workouts and right before competing, he tries to stay positive.
“To stay motivated as a team, we try to keep positive and hype people up for meets, as well as make people work hard at practice,” he said.
A few setbacks have changed how Longo views his sport. He recalled a time when he was expected to win a race but didn’t put forth his full effort, which led to a loss.
“That changed how I approached things because I now never get too overconfident, and I try to be more strategic in races,” he said.
During a race, the athlete aims not only to do well but also to maintain good form and pacing to maximize output.
“To finish strong toward the end of the race, I focus on never letting my form drop, while not running too high or too low, as well as running through the finish line,” Longo said.
Ultimately, he wants to leave his mark on the team through hard work and leadership.
“I hope younger runners will always see me as an athlete who worked really hard and led by example,” he said.
