Captain Spotlight: Ethan Borajkiewicz

Ethan Borajkiewicz, captain of the Woodland soccer team, has a positive outlook for the season, despite acknowledging there is a lot to improve on.

“I think it will be a good season,” Borajkiewicz said. “We definitely have a lot to improve on with the new coach coming from last year. I think this year has turned out better than last year.”

To prepare the team for success, Borajkiewicz focuses on all the little details and leadership. The team plans to review film, study formation and ensure that every player knows their role. For Borajkiewicz, being prepared means focusing on conditioning. He admitted that a challenge the team has faced is not being conditioned enough, especially since the new coach came on board right before the season started.

“We’ve been working really hard to practice, making sure to run and just getting better as a team,” Borajkiewicz said.

Borajkiewicz describes his leadership style as more of a laid-back leader. He is not the type to yell, but he makes sure everyone gets their work done and that the team stays in line. When faced with conflict, such as two players verbally arguing, he simply steps in and settles them both down.

To lift team morale after a tough loss, Borajkiewicz focuses on what they can control: the future.

“We usually just talk to them and tell them the game’s behind us, and we just have to look at the future,” he explained. “Whatever happens ahead of us is what we can control. We can’t control what happened in the past.”

For Borajkiewicz, the role of captain is enjoyable because it gives him a sense of responsibility and leadership, ensuring the players are ready to play.
