As the sun sets later, prolonging the warming up days, 7:00 pm has become the prime time to enjoy a cold treat. However, the same dilemma occurs each time sweet-treat-o’clock hits: Ice Cream or Froyo?

Although the closure of FroyoWorld and most PeachWaves–popular frozen yogurt locations–has led some to question the existence of frozen yogurt shops, the younger generation’s renewed interest in this customizable delicacy has brought about its revival in popularity. Frozen yogurt is once again enjoying a revival as people rediscover its appeal.

“I completely forgot froyo existed for like, four years, but now it is my favorite place to go with my friends,” said Ava Napiello, frozen yogurt connoisseur.

The revival of fro-yo now provides a formidable rival to the beloved, classic, ice cream, the dessert that has consistently been the backbone of summer for years upon years. Both desserts offer a substantial amount of enjoyment, they differ tremendously and ever so slightly at the same time.

“I like froyo because it’s customizable; you can add any toppings or mix any flavors you want. My favorite topping are the little scoops of cookie dough,” said Avery Digiovanna, froyo and ice cream enthusiast.

Many students enjoy the flexibility of the desert, as it allows much more variety and freedom to how they desire their bowl to be formulated. However, the downside of froyo is the base of the treat itself.

“Once you get past all the toppings, the froyo itself can be kind of bland and almost watery. Which is also kind of good when I want a desert that is a bit lighter than ice cream,” said Napiello.

The frozen yogurt itself is certainly less dense than typical indulgent ice cream, which depending on the mood of the consumer decides if it is pro or con. Ice cream’s base is far from watery and the rich consistency allows it to undeniably be good alone, without the toppings.

“Ice cream is just a good classic. You don’t have to worry about adding toppings or what tastes good together because it is delicious on its own,” Digiovanna conceded.

The simplicity of the dessert is especially beneficial for those who are indecisive. The options of frozen yogurt can be overwhelming, and adding two toppings that don’t actually work well together may throw off the dynamic of the entire bowl. With ice cream, it is incredibly difficult to go wrong with sprinkles, whipped cream, and perhaps some hot fudge.

The final factor of both treats comes down to the cost. High school students are notoriously broke, and $5.00-$10.00 treats a couple times a week seriously add up. Frozen yogurt is typically measured and charged by the ounce, in which consumers are not usually aware of how quickly their total can add up

“If I am not careful about how much I add to my froyo bowl, the weight adds up and soon enough I am paying $10.00 for some yogurt,” said Napiello.

Ice Cream however, is a set price every time, and the consumer knows exactly how much they are spending before being put on the spot at the register.

While both treats are undeniably delicious, it is near impossible to choose which one surpasses the other on the dessert ranking. At the end of the day, whichever frozen treat satiates those cravings and ends a summer day on a refreshing note is the one for you.
