In today’s world where everything is online and everyone is glued to their phones, it might seem like school spirit doesn’t matter anymore. Pep rallies, school dances, and sports games may feel old-fashioned or like a waste of time, but school spirit is still important. It gives us a break from stress and it creates pride in our school.
School spirit is more than just wearing school colors or showing up for a game, it’s about feeling like you’re part of something. With so much work to focus on, it’s easy to lose connection with the people around you. School spirit brings everyone together and helps build connections.
“It’s not just about cheering for the team, it’s about being a part of something,” says Senior Lachai White. “School spirit helps you connect with others, even if you’re not in the same classes or activities.”
School events like spirit week and sports games give students a chance to meet new people, make friends, and work together, which makes school more fun, and gives it more of a rewarding feel.
School can be overwhelming with all the homework, tests, and pressure to do well but, school spirit can help with that. It gives us something to look forward to and lets us take a break from the stress of school.
“A game or an event to look forward to makes school feel more manageable,” says Senior Jack Napoleone. “Even when school gets tough, school spirit has helped me relax and enjoy being part of something.”
Studies have shown that students who get involved in school events and feel connected to their school are less stressed and more likely to do well.
School spirit also creates pride in school. People forget that school spirit is about feeling proud of where you go to school and being a part of the traditions and community. When you cheer for your teams, attend events, or take part in school activities, it helps you feel connected to the school.
Even though things are changing with technology and online learning, school spirit still matters. It helps students feel like they belong, relieves stress, builds pride in your school, and even helps with schoolwork. Whether it’s cheering at a game, participating in spirit week, or supporting your friends, school spirit is still a big part of high school. It’s proof that some traditions are worth keeping.
