Pi Day is connected to mathematics and is celebrated on March 14 because the first three digits of Pi are 3.14. Pi is symbolized as π, a Greek letter. You get pi when you divide the distance around a circle by the distance across it. The answer will always be: 3.14159, every single time; no matter what. The Pi moment usually happens at 1:59 PM which represents the next three digits: 1,5, and 9.  Furthermore, it is also famous for scientists: Albert Einstein. 

An event relating to Pi Day took place on Friday, March 13 at Woodland Regional High School– it was full of laughter, as teachers and students gathered together to participate in this day. While you may expect them to celebrate math by solving hard problems on a whiteboard, that was not the case. Instead, since pi and pie sound the exact same, it was celebrated by having a special raffle to support Mu Alpha Theta. Tickets were sold during lunch waves by entering for a dollar, if your ticket was chosen– you had a chance to be able to pie your teacher in the face.

Several teachers were pied in the face by the students. Some teachers ended up with whipped cream in their hair, in their eyes, and even on their clothes. Everyone was cheering, laughing, and had smiles on their faces. Even though the pie was everywhere and got messy, it was for a great cause. The money raised will help the Woodland Math Honor Society with their events this year. It was a day that proved math can be a lot of fun.
