Following a critical ACL injury back in the fall that ended his high school football season, senior Erik Pulkkinen is back and stepping onto the baseball diamond with a new determination. Pulkkinen is looking to make an intense comeback to make up for the time he missed on the field and to build a legacy of leadership that carries his team back to the top after their incredible run in his sophomore year.
Heading into this season, Pulkkinen’s goals are centered on collective growth and the ultimate hardware.
“I want the team to be successful and win a state championship,” he said. “Individually, I just want to contribute in any way I can to help us win.”
With a team-first mindset, Pulkkinen remains focused on the daily grind required to reach those high-stakes postseason games. He draws inspiration from his role model, Mike Trout, admiring the way the superstar carries himself both on and off the diamond. Much like Trout, Pulkkinen aims to be a steady, reliable force for his squad, emphasizing a leadership style felt rather than just heard.
“I am a leader who leads by example,” Pulkkinen explained. “I always try to do the right thing and work hard so that others will follow.” By setting a high standard through his own work ethic, Pulkkinen ensures the team’s culture remains disciplined. However, he also knows that baseball is a game of mental hurdles. If he could go back and talk to his freshman self, his advice would focus on the resilience needed to survive a long season.
“Don’t think as much,” said Pulkkienen. “Focus on one play at a time.” That composed mentality is exactly what Pulkkinen intends to bring to the diamond this year. Grounded in experience and driven by a commitment to his teammates, he is ready to lead the charge.
