Polar Plunge

Freezing cold water for an amazing cause. On May 13, 2026 in collaboration with Best Buddies and Special Olympics, Woodland teachers and students took on a Polar Plunge. This portable, custom-built ice plunge tank used by Special Olympics chapters to brought the excitement of a polar plunge was brought to life in the courtyard to raise money for the school’s Best Buddies program. In raising over $2,000 for the program, this event was a hit from every participant.

“It was a lot of fun,” said senior participant Tyler Patchkofsky.  “I enjoyed getting to see my friends and seeing the amount of people that supported this cause.”

With a $25 donation, participants were able to plunge as many times as they wanted. Laughter and supportive shouts echoed each time a participant took the leap, turning a freezing challenge into a heartwarming display of school spirit. Athletic Director Christopher Dailey acted as the emcee for the afternoon, announcing each participant as they jumped.

The funds raised from the event will directly benefit the Woodland Best Buddies chapter, helping to fund future group activities, inclusive social gatherings, and awareness campaigns throughout the school year.

Given the overwhelming success of this year’s turn-out, discussions are already underway to make the Polar Plunge an annual Woodland tradition. With more participants, higher fundraising goals, and perhaps even colder water, teachers and students alike have proven they are more than willing to freeze for a fantastic cause.
