As the first drives of the 2026 season cut through the spring air, senior captain Matt Scarlato is ready to make his final year on the Woodland golf team count. Leading the Hawks with a steady approach, Scarlato steps onto the course not just to chase scores but to set the tone for a team built on growth, resilience, and the enjoyment of the game.
Scarlato didn’t pick up golfing until his freshman year of high school. What started as something new quickly turned into a commitment, as he worked to improve his game through consistent practice and patience. That dedication paid off early. One of Scarlato’s most memorable moments came during his sophomore season, when he placed in the top 10 at the NVL tournament.
“It was a surreal moment,” Scarlato said. “I wasn’t a top golfer in the NVL that year, so being able to place in the top 10 meant a lot to me.”
Now, heading into his senior season, Scarlato has set clear goals for himself and his team. Individually, he’s aiming to break into the top five at NVLs and qualify for states. As a team, he hopes the Hawks can compete at a high level and make a push toward the state tournament as well.
His approach to leadership reflects the nature of the sport itself. Golf may be individual on the scorecard, but Scarlato emphasizes the importance of team energy and support.
“I try to lift everyone’s morale and make sure we’re having a good time out there,” Scarlato said. “Golf can be frustrating, so keeping things positive is important.”
Scarlato’s mindset is shaped by the lessons he’s learned over the past four years. If he could advise his younger self, it would be simple:
“Just keep practicing every day and stay the course.”
